A Winning Partnership: Sports Coaching in Action
City of Glasgow College’s Sports Coaching Curriculum has forged an inspiring partnership with Springburn Academy and Partick Thistle Charitable Trust (PTCT), offering valuable learning opportunities for students while positively impacting the local community. This collaboration demonstrates the college's commitment to reality-based learning, work placements, volunteering, and helping students transition into employment.
Founded in 2011, PTCT is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) focused on promoting health, education, active citizenship, and inclusion in North Glasgow. By using sports, education, and community programmes, the trust has become a key partner in developing the College’s Sports Coaching Curriculum.
The partnership has led to Sports Coaching students delivering weekly football sessions to over 100 children across six local schools. The initiative has increased pupil engagement, attendance, and participation in Springburn Academy activities. The use of UEFA-standard pitches, alongside the expertise of the College students, has created a dynamic learning environment, making physical activity enjoyable and accessible.
Peter Dennison, a lecturer at the College, highlighted the programme's impact: “Reality-based learning has transformed our students, boosting both their confidence and their skills.” Over 40 second-year HND Sports Coaching students engage in practical coaching roles. Divided into two groups, one works with senior students at Springburn Academy, while the other delivers a games-based football curriculum to primary school children. This dual approach helps students experience different coaching styles and age groups, enriching their skill set.
As the semesters progress, students switch groups, gaining exposure to a range of coaching methods and participant types. This structure builds practical skills and provides opportunities to network with industry professionals, enhancing career prospects.
Beyond coaching, the partnership offers career development opportunities. Students attend workshops by PTCT staff on community sports provision, inclusive sports, and leadership. Some secure volunteer placements, with a few even gaining paid roles through PTCT’s After Schools Programme. Ten students have also gained experience as video analysts for Partick Thistle Academy, developing skills for future careers in sports. City of Glasgow College alumnus and Thistle Trust coach, Calum Kyle, reflected on his experience: “The real-life experience gave me the confidence to step straight into a coaching role. It was invaluable preparation for my career.”
The partnership’s potential for growth is significant, with plans for expanded collaboration, including coaching sessions for the College’s Supported Learning department. This ensures more students benefit from hands-on experience and industry insights.
The College’s Associate Dean for Sport, Fitness, and Tourism Iain Houston shared his appreciation: “I offer my gratitude for the hard work of our City of Glasgow College staff in developing and nurturing this initiative. Senior school staff have spoken highly of our students’ professionalism and their ability to support exercise and sport within the schools effectively. This tri-institutional initiative offers significant benefits for all involved.”
This partnership is a testament to the power of collaboration, shaping the future of students and children, and developing lasting skills and career opportunities.
