Winners of the Performance Costume 2023 Competition Inspired by "The Insect Play"

The outstanding creativity and talent of our students were celebrated in this year's Applied Arts Performance Costume Competition, which took inspiration from Karel Čapek's renowned play, "The Insect Play."

The competition showcased the incredible work of first-year HNC Applied Arts students who reimagined the play's characters using recycled materials, various textile techniques and a lot of creative imagination.

The judging panel, comprised of industry professionals Arianna Mele, Director of Print Clan Studios, and Deacon Robert Linton, from the Incorporation of Bonnetmakers and Dyers of Glasgow, had the challenging task of selecting the winners among the remarkable entries.

The competition not only exhibited the students' artistic abilities but also highlighted the importance of insects in our current climate, raising awareness about their crucial role in the ecosystem.

The winners were announced as follows:

  • 1st Place - Megan Adams
  • 2nd Place - Neslihan Kucudemiral
  • 3rd Place - Brooke Hannah Tennant
  • Highly Commended - Laura Lovin

Congratulations to all the winners and participants and thanks to the Incorporation of Bonnetmakers for providing the prizes.

The recognition garnered by these students opens doors of opportunity for them and they now have the chance to participate in a student exchange program with the Modeschulen Fashion School in Nuremberg this coming November.

One of the highly commended students, Laura Lovin, expressed her gratitude and delight, stating, "Receiving the Performance Costumes recognition brought a gratifying conclusion to a wonderful year."

The competition not only served as a platform to showcase the extraordinary talents of these young artists but also highlighted the synergy between artistic expression and environmental awareness. The imaginative reinterpretation of "The Insect Play" characters using recycled materials undoubtedly captivated the judges and visitors alike.

You can visit their amazing work at the Ralph Cowan Gallery at our City Campus until Thurs 22 June.
