Merchant Navy Day 2024
Merchant Navy cadets from City of Glasgow College took part in the Merchant Navy Memorial Day on Tuesday, 3 September. The cadets joined Glasgow’s Rt Hon Lord Provost Councillor, Jacqueline McLaren, for the annual wreath-laying ceremony at George Square.
Paul Little, Principal and Chief Executive of City of Glasgow College, highlighted the significance of the occasion, stating:
“City of Glasgow College, which trains nearly half of the UK’s Merchant Navy Officers, is the nation’s leading maritime and engineering institution. It is fitting that we honour and remember those who made significant sacrifices in the past. Our students are preparing for a vital industry and we take great pride in having our cadets participate in this important event”.
Merchant Navy Day honours the courageous men and women who were instrumental in supporting the UK throughout both World Wars. It also underscores the essential role of today’s merchant seafarers, who are responsible for delivering 90% of the food and goods that sustain us, both within the UK and across the globe.
The ceremony featured Dr Nina Baker’s reading of the poignant poem ‘In Waters Deep’ by Eileen Mahoney. A solemn two-minute silence followed, during which the Merchant Navy Standard was respectfully dipped in salute to those seafarers who have been lost at sea.
This annual event, commemorated on the anniversary of the start of World War II, sees the Red Ensign, the official flag of the UK’s Merchant Navy, flown proudly from Glasgow City Chambers. The flag also flies year-round at City of Glasgow College’s Riverside campus, symbolising the enduring importance of the Merchant Navy.
