Local Pupils Inspired at City of Glasgow College's Apprenticeship Week

In a celebration of vocational education and hands-on learning, students from Rosshall Secondary, the Gaelic School, and Smithycroft Secondary flooded the halls of City of Glasgow College on March 8th for an unforgettable experience during Apprenticeship Week. Generously sponsored by the Glasgow Heritage Trust, this event offered a unique opportunity for young minds to explore the world of trades firsthand.

The event gave pupils the chance to attend immersive sessions in Painting & Decorating, Bricklaying, and Stonemasonry. Under the guidance of experienced lecturers, they delved into the intricate techniques and craftsmanship that define these trades. From wielding paintbrushes to laying bricks with precision, the students were empowered to unleash their creativity and hone their practical skills. Curriculum Head for Heritage Skills David Currie expressed:

‘It was a rewarding experience to witness the students' engagement during the taster sessions. Their curiosity and willingness to learn about different trades were evident throughout the day. Providing them with this hands-on opportunity was valuable in helping them explore potential career paths. It is encouraging to see young minds show interest in practical skills, and I believe events like this play a significant role in guiding them towards future opportunities in the trades.’

This collaborative effort between schools and the College not only broadened horizons but also ignited passions for careers in the trades. Louise Fulton, a Career Adviser from Skills Development Scotland, expressed her enthusiasm, stating:

‘It was incredibly beneficial for the pupils to delve into the more niche and technical aspects of construction. This helped the pupils to gain a deeper understanding of the technical skills and abilities required within the field of construction.’

For the attending students, this experience served as a pivotal moment as they discovered exciting possibilities for their future careers. From aspiring painters to budding bricklayers, the event sparked inspiration and instilled confidence in their abilities. The success of Apprenticeship Week at City of Glasgow College serves as a testament to the power of collaboration and firsthand learning in shaping the next generation of skilled professionals. With determination and dedication, these students are ready to build a brighter future, one brick at a time.
