City Welcomes BAFTA-Winning Producer Marcus Wilson for Inspiring Industry Talk

City of Glasgow College’s television students had an incredible opportunity to gain industry insights from producer Marcus Wilson, who was interviewed by HNC Television student Darren Syme Coremans. Marcus shared his experiences working across all major networks, offering an invaluable look into the world of television production.
The event featured clips from Marcus’s impressive body of work, including the BAFTA-winning Doctor Who Anniversary Special and The A Word. He also reflected on his time working on hit productions such as Our Zoo, Taggart, Whitechapel, and the Emmy-nominated Luther. His experience in the industry provided students with unique perspectives on the craft of producing high-quality drama for television.
James Wilson, Curriculum Head for Broadcasting, praised the session, saying:
"Marcus was a great speaker and his experience of producing some of the biggest dramas in UK television really engaged our students. The advice he offered was inspiring and focussed on the career aspirations of the many who filled our TV studio for the discussion, which was ably chaired by HNC student, Darren Syme Coremans. We are grateful to Speakers for Schools who supported the event."
For Darren, the experience was particularly valuable, giving him a taste of what a career in broadcasting could look like:
"The opportunities offered by City of Glasgow College go far beyond any I have experienced in an educational setting before. Gaining the experience of hosting an interview with a guest speaker as established as Marcus Wilson has given me an insight into a career that can often seem quite mysterious. Being encouraged in this way has given me, as a student, insight into ways in which I could be building my own career and learning from real-life experiences gives me a far greater sense of pride in my successes within the field."
The student Q&A session that followed was especially lively, with Doctor Who being the hot topic among the audience. The discussion reinforced the College’s commitment to preparing the next generation of broadcasters by facilitating meaningful interactions with industry professionals. Marcus Wilson’s generosity in sharing his 35 years of experience left an impression on students, further inspiring them to pursue their careers in television with confidence and enthusiasm.
