City of Glasgow College retain the Scottish Student Sport College Cup
After last year’s ground-breaking College Cup win against Fife and Edinburgh College, it was time to go again as City of Glasgow College travelled to the Oriam Performance Centre in Edinburgh to defend the College Cup. With the inclusion of seven events in total and with more involvement from other colleges than last year, this promised to be a busy and exciting day for college sports.
A team of 63 students across a wide variety of academic courses represented the college in men and women’s football, volleyball, and basketball, as well as mixed badminton. Overall, the team won
- Four golds in men’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball and mixed badminton.
- Two silver medals for women’s football and women’s volleyball.
- One bronze medal in men’s football.
This represented an even bigger improvement in the medal tally from last year.
Ross Mathison, Sport and Fitness Lecturer and Head Coach for the Men’s Basketball team said:
“It was another great cup finals day this year with a wide variety of colleges competing across a variety of sports. It is always great to see our students thriving and enjoying taking part in competitions. As the head coach of the men’s basketball team, I have been really pleased with our progress from last year as we continue to improve.
For us as a college winning back to back trophies demonstrates a real commitment from staff to provide quality opportunities both recreationally and competitively, which the students have really bought into this academic term. We're looking forward to defending the trophy next year as we continue to improve student sport at the college’’
Harry Orr, HND Sports Therapy student and part of the winning men’s volleyball team for the second year running said:
‘’Competing in the college cup over the past couple of years has been an eye-opening experience for me. A few of my teammates have had limited experience playing volleyball before coming to college, so credit is due to our coaches for developing these players and helping them reach their full potential. From a personal point of view, winning gold for men’s volleyball and being awarded the MVP was a tremendous way to end my time playing volleyball for City of Glasgow College. It was also great to see everyone coming together and contributing to winning the college cup’’
For the first time, results were uploaded as and when the games finished via a live score tracker, which created more anticipation and excitement on the day.
You can read more about the students’ success on the Scottish Student Sport website, and you can see photographs of our students in action on our Student Sport Facebook page.
Remarkably, out of the seven events, we had five students gain a Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for their exceptional contributions to their team.
MVP’s (Most Valuable Player)
- Men’s Volleyball - Harry Orr.
- Mixed Badminton - Ella Haime.
- Men’s Basketball - Euan Court.
- Women’s Basketball - Grace Gormley.
- Women’s Football - Maura Paterson.
Well done to all the students, staff and coaches involved in this fantastic achievement.
