City Alumna Jemma Reekie heads to Paris 2024 Olympics
City of Glasgow College is cheering on former student Jemma Reekie, who will represent Team GB in the 800 metres event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Jemma recently secured a silver medal in the 800m at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow with a time of 2:02.72.
Jemma graduated with an HNC in Sports Coaching from the College in 2016. Her Olympic journey began at 14 when she carried the torch ahead of the 2012 Games in London. Her passion for running started at age nine with her PE teacher’s cross-country group and grew at Kilbarchan Amateur Athletic Club. Although she did not enjoy school much, running was always her focus.
Jemma credits her time at the College for broadening her knowledge of sport, including psychology and nutrition. “The lecturers were supportive, and I had access to the gym whenever I needed it. My time at college was the best and so much fun,” she recalled. The College accommodated Jemma’s rigorous training schedule, ensuring she could balance academics and athletics.
Jemma's journey from City of Glasgow College to the Olympics is a testament to what passion, dedication, and the right support can achieve. Her story is sure to inspire new students in our HNC Sports Coaching program, showing them that with hard work and determination, they too can reach their highest goals. Jemma’s success demonstrates the impact of quality education and the importance of pursuing your passion. New students can look to her as a role model, proving that the skills and experiences gained at City of Glasgow College can lead to extraordinary achievements on the world stage.
Jemma will be competing in the 800m heats on Friday, August 2, with the showpiece final set for Monday, August 5. As Jemma aims for a final spot in the 800m, we send her all our best wishes.
Go, Jemma!
