Made for Business: Kelan's Journey with Chivas Brothers
Kelan McElwee is 19 years old and has already started on an exciting path as a multi-skilled engineering apprentice with Chivas Brothers. Mixing hands-on experience on site with studies at City of Glasgow College, Kelan’s journey showcases how apprenticeships can unlock potential and create bright futures in business. Here’s his story.
Finding the Right Path
“Growing up, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do,” Kelan recalls. “But as I got older, I realised I really enjoyed maths, physics, and practical subjects where I worked with my hands. My careers advisor told me all about the opportunities in Engineering and it felt like this was the right path for me.”
Discovering Apprenticeships
Kelan first learned about apprenticeships during a school careers event. “I met Stuart Banks, the distillery manager for Chivas, and after he explained what an apprenticeship involved, I immediately knew this was the right path for me. While school encouraged university, the apprenticeship route felt more aligned with my interests and how I learn best.”
Why an Apprenticeship?
Kelan’s decision was clear: “I’ve never enjoyed purely theoretical learning. The idea of earning while learning and gaining practical skills really appealed to me. Plus, graduating without worrying about paying off student loans was a huge advantage.”
The Application Process
The process of securing an apprenticeship with Chivas was all worth it in the end for Kelan “I applied through the apprenticeship.scot website and started by sending my CV. I was asked to do an online aptitude test assessing problem-solving and logical thinking. After passing, I attended a face-to-face interview with competency-based questions and completed a practical task. It was challenging, but it felt great to be selected.”
A Day in the Life
As a multi-skilled engineering apprentice, no two days are the same for Kelan. “If something on-site breaks down, it’s our job to investigate and fix it. We use problem-solving to identify faults, whether mechanical or electrical, and keep everything running smoothly. I also assist with planned maintenance tasks.”
Kelan thrives on the variety: “From working on pumps to tackling complex engineering challenges, I’m constantly learning from experienced engineers.”
College Life and Growth
Kelan’s apprenticeship combines workplace experience with academic learning. “In my first year, I completed an SVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations and an NC Level 6 in Electrical Engineering. Now, I’m doing an HNC in Mechatronics, even though it’s not required for my apprenticeship—my employer is supporting me to go the extra mile. It’s tough but rewarding, and the skills I’ve gained at college are invaluable on the job.”
Advice for Aspiring Apprentices
“If you enjoy teamwork, practical tasks, and learning by doing, an apprenticeship is an amazing opportunity, you’ll develop skills, gain experience, and start earning straight away—all while avoiding student loans.”
