International Partnerships Latest News

City of Glasgow College maintains longstanding and successful partnerships across every continent extending to 120 overseas partners across 39 countries and has hosted 25 ministerial and governmental visits from 13 different countries.  Highlighting our brand popularity among the global audience, our partners include public and private educational institutions, financial services, governmental organisations and non-profit organisations. 

So far in 2024 our Business and International Partnerships team have been busy networking with existing partners and building new partnerships.  You can read about some of their visits and projects below.

    It was a pleasure to visit our partner institution, ZJTIE, in Hangzhou, China, to celebrate the success of our graduates who achieved the Joint Diploma in Supply Chain Management.

    Since 2015, our Sino-Scotland project has enrolled over 350 students across nine learner cohorts. Congratulations to all the graduates, and a heartfelt thank you to our joint teaching teams from China and City of Glasgow College.

     

    City of Glasgow College was delighted to co-host this Conference with SJIHMCT where we discussed the importance of technology in the hospitality and service industry, and the importance of a relevant curriculum to support upskilling and reskilling with technological advancements within these sectors.

    We heard presentations from a distinguished panel of guests from Malta, India, Austria and Scotland including a session on robotics in the hospitality industry from Gary Maclean, Executive Chef, City of Glasgow College and National Chef for Scotland. 

     

    We were delighted to host Guo Peiqian, President and senior team from Shandong Polytechnic.  This was an excellent opportunity to share best practices and engage in fruitful discussions around industry engagement. Together, we aim to inform a fit-for-purpose curriculum and explore the Scottish Modern Apprenticeship model. We're looking forward to strengthening our partnership and friendship.

     

    We were delighted to host Dr Erole Naomab, Vice Chancellor from the Cooperative Education Unit, Namibia University of Science and Technology, alongside his senior team.  And a warm welcome back to City of Glasgow College for Pinehas Auene, Councillor and Permanent Representative to IMO, and a pleasure to welcome Frazer Lang, CEO of the South African Business Association who organised the visit.

    Our discussions centered around a partnership aimed at shaping the future of professional, technical and vocational education in Namibia. This initiative promises to open up avenues for a spectrum of professional and technical programmes, nurturing skilled talent in maritime and other sectors in Namibia.

    It was great to be part of #PieLive24 representing City of Glasgow College.  A fabulous opportunity to engage in exciting sessions covering a range of topics, including insights into the UAE and Saudi markets and the rapidly evolving landscape of transnational education, as well as to explore potential collaboration opportunities.  Thanks to Sanam Arora for the interesting and informative session on UK/India Relations and the future of Post Study Work Visas.

    We had the great pleasure of visiting Munnar Catering College in Kerala, India and also their campus in Ras Al Khaimah.  We were exceptionally impressed with the excellent facilities in the College and the full campus estate in Kerala.

    What truly makes Munnar Catering College shine is its staff. The students themselves are a testament to the institution's commitment to excellence.

    We extend our thanks to the entire team at Munnar Catering College and in particular to Tissan Thachankary, Chairman and George Chacko, Principal for their kind hospitality during our visit.  We look forward to a long and fruitful partnership.

     

    Extending our heartfelt gratitude to St. Joseph's Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology for their exceptional hospitality during our recent visit. It was a pleasure to engage with such a dedicated and professional team.

    We were thoroughly impressed by the professionalism displayed by both staff and students. The commitment to excellence, evident throughout the campus, is commendable.

    It was a privilege to attend the formal launch of the Scottish International Education Strategy and to hear insights from Graeme Dey, Minister for Higher and Further Education, Professor Andrea Nolan, Universities Scotland International Committee Convener and Andy Witty, Colleges Scotland on the main themes driving Scotland's global reputation.

    Exciting times ahead as we work together to maximise opportunities and foster collaboration in education on a global scale.

    Thrilled to share the progress from our recent meetings with Matthew Castillo and Joseph Meli from the European Vocational Academy (EVA), City of Glasgow College's partners in Malta.  Discussions focused on collaborative opportunities in Hair & Beauty, Healthcare, Bakery, Cabin Crew, Hospitality, English, Nautical, and STEM with a focus on upskilling and reskilling initiatives. Our partnership showcases a shared commitment to advancing vocational and professional education and training with EVA's enthusiasm aligning seamlessly with City of Glasgow College's vision to let learning flourish through inspiration, excellence and innovation.

     

    Delighted to have met with Marwan Abdulaziz Janahi and Chindu Mohsin at the BETT 24 Conference to discuss opportunities for City of Glasgow College with engaging conversations about the educational landscape in Dubai and the potential for collaboration and innovation in the field.

    What an absolute delight to host our second group of IISMA students for 16 weeks as part of the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards, funded by the Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan (Ministry of Education and Culture Republic of Indonesia). It has been an incredible journey filled with learning, cultural exchange and meaningful connections.

    The students pursuing an SQA Professional Development Award in Team Leadership and Management, jointly certified by the Chartered Management Institute, have greatly enriched our academic environment and the City of Glasgow College community. Their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn left a lasting academic and cultural impression. Throughout the program, they actively engaged in cultural exchange activities, fostering mutual understanding.

    What stood out the most was the learners adaptability and resilience in navigating challenges, showcasing a positive attitude that inspired everyone around them creating a truly global community.

    We're looking forward to future collaborations with the Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan (Ministry of Education and Culture Republic of Indonesia) and more experiences like these.

     

    Congratulations to the dedicated Indonesian teachers from across West Java who completed a 3-week maritime training program at City of Glasgow College. This activity is a pivotal part of our 5-year work plan in collaboration with the West Java Province Government, supporting Indonesia's ambitious strides in maritime development.

    The group embraced the opportunity to enhance their understanding of maritime affairs, contributing significantly to the nation's aspirations and paving the way for a brighter maritime future for Indonesia.

This initiative promises to open up avenues for a spectrum of professional and technical programmes, nurturing skilled talent in the maritime and across a range of sectors in Namibia, and to shape the next generation of leaders and innovators.

    We were delighted to welcome delegates from the Ministry of Malaysia to CoGC as part of their 6 month UK visit. Delegates were shown around the City campus facilities to further understand the Scottish educational landscape and how this relates to trade and industry. 3 of our IISMA Indonesian students presented to the ministry delegates regarding their experience of Scottish education and how the college has supported them throughout their programme. We look forward to further discussions and opportunities between Malaysia and Scotland. 

     

    Sixteen IISMA students studying at Portsmouth University joined our 20 Indonesian students as part of the IISMA student exchange element of their UK education. All are studying for a PDA in Team Leading and Management. Their 3-day visit consisted of a visit to the Mitchell Library in Glasgow, insightful masterclasses on High Performing teams and Entrepreneurship, as well as a Scottish experience night.  Our IISMA students and college staff look forward to the reciprocal visit at the end of November, and in continuing to forge a long-lasting UK partnership with Portsmouth University. 

    It was a pleasure to return to Indonesia and engage with key representatives from the West Java Government. We’ve made significant strides in our work plan to support developments in maritime education through our capacity building project and we look forward to progressing our expansion plans next year.

    A special thanks to Deden Saeful Hidayat, Secretary of the West Java Education Office, and Ahmad Sundoro, Teacher Division of the West Java Education Office, for meeting with us and for their ongoing support.

    We also had the opportunity to connect with Zoe Rimba from the Foreign Commonwealth Office and Aldo Cakra Anom and to reconnect with Fajar A. Rustandi and our valued college partner and friend Pak Budi Hermawan. 

    We were delighted to return to Cirebon and reconnect with the wonderful team at SMK Negeri 1 Mundu. Accompanied by Fajar A. Rustandi and Aldo from the West Java Government, we were welcomed in a truly special way with a Year 1 Cadet ceremony and a traditional Cirebon dance, and as always experienced exceptional hospitality, kindness, and friendship.

    It was also inspiring to meet with the 20 dedicated teachers from various SMK Maritime schools who participated in our three-week Professional Maritime training in Glasgow at City of Glasgow College. Seeing the training being put into action in Cirebon was incredibly rewarding.

    A further honour was meeting with Mr Wahyu Mijaya, Mayor of Cirebon, at his residence and we look forward to a return visit to Glasgow in the near future and to progressing these partnerships in future months.

    We were honoured to host a 20-member delegation from the Information Office of Shanghai Municipality to discuss our corporate strategy in branding, communications, and marketing, alongside our innovative approaches to learning and teaching in media.

    Delegates visited our industry-standard media training facilities providing students with hands-on experience in real-world media environments. From state-of-the-art TV and radio studios to digital editing suites and multimedia production spaces, delegates were able to experience our excellent media education, supported by experienced professionals and innovative teaching methods,

    We are looking forward to exploring new opportunities for collaboration and further promoting mutual understanding between our cities. 

    City of Glasgow College was honoured to host a delegation from South Korea to discuss the Scottish apprenticeship model, pathways in operation, and the future of work-based technical and vocational training.

    Between our visitors and the college's Faculty of Nautical & STEM, SVQ, Workforce Development and International teams there was a lot to talk about, and we look forward to working with our South Korean partners in future. Both countries have done a lot of impressive work in developing and promoting apprenticeships as a vital route to qualifications and work for young people with further work planned to support the apprenticeship route as part of this ongoing and valuable partnership. 

     

    City of Glasgow College was proud to welcome a new group of students from the Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO), studying supply chain and logistics for the next 10 weeks. 

    Many thanks to Frazer Lang for organising an insightful meeting focused on education and skills training opportunities in Tanzania. It was an honour to engage with His Excellency Mbelwa Kairuki and Ms. Mercy Kitonga, Head of Chancery and Education Attaché, as we explored areas of partnership.

    A special thank you to Professor David Price from the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Africa Working Group for chairing and hosting the meeting.

    We were delighted to be back in China with our partner ZJTIE welcoming the new cohort of students to the joint Supply Chain Management Diploma. Our ZJTIE students begin their studies with City of Glasgow College lecturers Angela Kershaw and Andrew Newell in Hangzhou over the coming weeks.

    It was wonderful to be back at Munnar Catering College (MCC) in Kerala and reconnect with the amazing staff and students. It was an honour for delegates to celebrate Onam together, especially while wearing the traditional Kerala attire, and we look forward to co-delivering Hospitality, Management and Business programmes together.

    We were pleased to host the Federation of Trade Unions of Uzbekistan and to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to foster collaboration in trade union education.

    The event featured insightful discussions and presentations on trade union education initiatives. We look forward to further developing this international partnership in the months ahead.

    A huge thank you to Dr Sheri Kurian, Institute of Hotel Management and Culinary Technology for inviting City of Glasgow College to co-host the international conference, Transforming Hospitality with AI & Technology: Enhancing Operations, Sustainability & Guest Experience. A special thank you to all the incredible speakers who shared their expertise on the evolving role of AI and technology in hospitality.

    It was a pleasure to hear from James Godber, Deputy Head of Mission, British Deputy High Commission, Bengaluru, for his thought-provoking address as Chief Guest.

    We’re excited about the new connections and friendships we’ve made during this conference and look forward to continuing our discussions and hosting a return visit to City of Glasgow College soon.

    City of Glasgow College was pleased to participate in a local community event in collaboration with Peacehaven Nursing Home and Action for Integrated Care (Singapore), aimed at raising mental health awareness among Singaporean residents. The event featured three outstanding cooking demonstrations by CoGC Chef Gary Maclean.

    We had a very productive and insightful meeting with Neil McInnes, Head of Southeast Asia, Scottish Development International and Lissy Vadakel, Country Director for the British Council, discussing the potential for professional and technical education opportunities in Singapore.

    We look forward to furthering our partnerships in Singapore to meet skills growth requirements in key sectors.

    We were delighted to reconnect with Dr. Andrew Fleming, Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata. It is always a pleasure to visit India, strengthening our existing partnerships and exploring new opportunities for collaboration.

    During our visit, we had the privilege of touring the International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) and meeting with Dr. Suborno Bose and his dedicated team. We were impressed by the outstanding facilities and enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by the talented students.

    We look forward to hosting IIHM at City of Glasgow College and advancing the exciting opportunities we discussed.

    We had an excellent start in Delhi to our latest India trip, with meetings with Dr Manish Malhotra, Raja Dasgupta and team. We look forward to progressing our discussions.

    Our representatives enjoyed a productive visit and institutional tour to the International Institute of Culinary Arts. Thank you, Arjun Datta and Rupreet Datta and we look forward to formalising our partnership and taking forward the opportunities we discussed.
