Overview

The WSET Level 1 spirits is a beginner level introduction to spirits for those starting a career in the industry or pursuing an interest.

For individuals new to the subject, this qualification offers a hands-on introduction to the world of spirits. You’ll explore the main styles and types of spirits through sight, smell, and taste to develop an understanding of the key factors affecting flavours and aromas. Upon successful completion, you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.

The course fee includes the course, tastings, certificate, exam fee and lapel badge. This allows you to gain your WSET certificate at level 1 on completing the assessment.

Examination - 1 hour multiple choice examination paper at the end of the course.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • No formal entry requirements for the course.
  • An interest in spirits - professionally or as a hobby.
  • All applicants must be 18 years old or over.

You must be of legal drinking age to participate in any alcohol tasting. However, this is not a barrier to completing the qualification.

  • The basic principles of spirit production.
  • The main types and styles of spirits.
  • How to serve spirits.
  • Factors affecting the flavour of spirits.
  • How to describe spirits using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Spirits® (SAT).

After the course

Careers

This is a one-day course taught over 6 hours (9am – 5pm) at our City campus.

Assessment methods

One-hour multiple choice exam taking place at the end of the course.
