Overview

The course provides basic training for officers or ratings assigned specific duties or responsibilities related to cargo or cargo equipment on oil, chemical or liquefied gas tankers.

This training programme is designed in accordance with the revised STCW Code and complies with the latest Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) requirements.

It complies with the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) prerequisites to have your CoC endorsed to work on tankers at operational level or to be issued with CoP for Basic Training for Oil, Chemical and Liquefied Gas Tanker Cargo Operations.

This training program will teach learners the skills, understanding and competence required to carry out safe handling, storage and transportation of oil chemical and liquefied gas cargoes ensuring compliance with health, safety and environmental requirements. Thus, it will be useful for industry professionals eg. cargo surveyors and personnel involved in oil, chemical and gas terminal operations.

Minimum entry requirements

Candidates aspiring to obtain MCA approved certificate should comply with the requirements as per MSN 1866(M)

  • MCA approved MNTB Tanker Firefighting program.
  • Valid UK ENG1 medical cert, for cadet trainees, ratings and candidates without UK Cert. Of Competency (CoC).

Note: If you are not in possession of the MCA minimum entry requirements we can assist you to meet the requirements.

Industry professionals who do not require STCW certification will be issued with a Certificate of attendance on successful completion of the course. 

What you study

The course is aimed to develop competence in:

  • Contribute to the safe cargo operation of oil, chemical and liquefied gas tankers.
  • Take precautions to prevent hazards.
  • Apply occupational health and safety precautions and measures.
  • Respond to emergencies.
  • Take precautions to prevent pollution of the environment from the release of oil, chemicals or liquefied gases.

Course content includes:

  • Background of oil, chemical and liquefied gases transported by sea.
  • Tanker types and their piping system.
  • Physical and chemical properties of cargo.
  • Hazards of oil, chemical and liquefied gas cargoes.
  • Proper use of gas monitoring equipment.
  • Safe working practices and procedures.
  • Safety equipment and protective devices.
  • Loading, unloading, care in transit, tank cleaning and gas freeing operations.
  • Effect of oil, chemical and gas pollution.
  • Emergency procedures.
  • Tanker safety culture.
  • Use of MSDS.

There are three learning outcomes to this training:

  • Outcome 1: The learner knows the properties of oil, chemical and liquefied gases and the hazards associated with them.
  • Outcome 2: The learner is able to apply health, safety and environmental precautions and measures in working on oil, chemical and liquefied gas tankers.
  • Outcome 3: The learner is able to carry out safe oil, chemical and liquefied gas tanker cargo operations.

After the course

Careers

This course is mandatory to work on board oil, chemical, liquefied gas tankers and terminals. This course will enable you to seek employment on tanker vessels.

You can apply for an endorsement to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency using the MSF form - Tanker Endorsements MSF 4210 Rev 0721.

 

Teaching

How the course is taught

The course is taught using modern teaching and learning pedagogy where the students can be in control of their learning. On enrolment students will be provided with the learning material on Canvas, our VLE,  before the start of the course.

The course is 22 hours in total of instructor lead interactive classroom sessions using full audio, visual, and multimedia aids. The course is taught over 3 days from 9am-5pm.
