Overview

This course is designed for students with additional support needs who are interested in finding work-based training and employment.

You will study a range of SQA qualifications however the focus of this course is work experience. You will be involved in horticulture placements in our college gardens and allotment while also working in our community-based café. Students will also have the opportunity to work in other areas across the college such as housekeeping, catering and reception.

The course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 3. 

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • English at National 3, Numeracy at National 3.
  • Able to travel independently.
  • Additional Support Needs.

Additional selection requirements

  • You will be given priority if you can demonstrate prior work experience, evidence of volunteering, membership of organisations/clubs, and a positive attitude to work.
  • Your interview is by appointment and parents/carers may be invited to join the discussion at the end of the interview.

ESOL entry requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

What you study

You will undertake work-based learning in relevant work placements in a range of vocational areas.

Examples from previous years include Horticulture, administration, housekeeping, reception, hospitality, catering and retail.

In college, you will study ICT, Numeracy, Communication, Personal Development, Practical Development and Work Experience at SCQF 3 and undertake intensive job seeking and vocational research skills.

Teaching

How the course is taught

During the initial phase, you will work 1:1 with a job coach to identify vocational interests and match you to relevant placements. During this period you will work on identifying what it means to be job ready, prepare for interviews, and practice the skills required to establish and maintain good working relationships.

In Phase two, you will commence work placements, continuing to attend college for guidance and core skills work. You will be supported in placement by programme staff. The course will be two and a half days a week.
