Overview
This course is ideal if you're looking to pursue a career in the Construction Industry at a technical level.
It's perfect if you:
- Want to build your confidence in academic studies.

- Are returning to learning after a break.
- Want to experience the breadth of subjects taught within the built environment.
Offering specially designed, nationally validated SQA units, the course is taught by staff with real experience in the industry and a proven track record of bringing out the best in students. It offers a mix of craft and technical units, combined with theoretical and practical learning in both classrooms and workshops.
This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 6.
Entry requirements
Minimum entry requirements
- Two National 5 qualifications preferably including English, Mathematics, a Science or a Technical subject; OR
- Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

ESOL entry requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

During this course you'll study a range of subjects relevant to the Construction Industry. Some of the units included are:
- Construction Materials: An Introduction.
- Principles of Conservation in the Built Heritage.
- Fundamentals of Wall Tiling.
- Decorative Painting.
- Block Walling: An Introduction.
After the course

This course prepares you for working in a variety of jobs, including:
- Quantity Surveying Technician.
- Building Control Technician.
- Architectural Technician.
- Building Technician.
- Building Site Supervisor.
- Construction Operative Trainee/Apprentice.
Continuing Study
Successful students will be eligible for direct entry to the NC Built Environment programme. In turn, this feeds into the first year of any of our four construction-related HND programmes:
- Architectural Technology.
- Building Surveying.
- Construction Management.
- Quantity Surveying.
Successful students can also progress to other construction related NC programmes at other colleges in Scotland.
Teaching
How the course is taught
This course will be delivered through blended learning with demonstrations, lectures and practical activities.
Assessment methods
You will be assessed via a mix of summative and formative assessments.
Additional Information
Dress code
For classroom work there is no dress code.
For the practical side of the course, you will be issued with steel-toed safety boots and work coveralls. Safety boots are to be worn at all times during practical activities, however workwear must not be worn outside the construction hall or workwear cafe. Students not following this code of conduct will be subject to disciplinary action.
