This course provides insight into the technical and professional side of the construction sector. You’ll gain an appreciation of a different aspect of this industry. You will:
- Explore the range of work carried out in the construction industry and the roles that contribute to a sustainable built environment.
- Investigate diverse architectural styles and building types and consider the principles involved in building design.
- Consider what influences building design. Working collaboratively, you’ll produce a project plan using digital tools and processes, to create concept ideas to meet a client’s brief.
- Explore sustainability in global, national and local communities. You’ll investigate the basic techniques and methods commonly adopted in sustainable building design and construction.
- Focus on employability skills to enhance your job prospects including good time-keeping, teamwork, quality checks and health and safety awareness.

Entry requirements
Minimum entry requirements
This course will suit students who have Maths and English at National 4 and either a technical subject e. Graphics (preferred) or a Science.
You will have good communication skills and work well as part of a team. You should be able to act on instructions and be committed to working in a manner that supports health and safety at work.

After the course
Careers
This course will provide an ideal foundation for a diverse range of careers out with the usual trade route in the Construction sector. With further qualifications, you could embark on a career in Construction Management, Architectural Technology or Building and Civil Engineering.
Continuing Study
This course will allow students to make a more informed choice of progression within this industry. Graduates of this course will be able to progress onto Built Environment NPA at Level 6, before progressing onto HNC and HND.

How the course is taught
We adopt a student-centred approach to learning where your tutors will facilitate your learning and comprehension through individual and group work. Your theory and knowledge will be backed up with practical experience gained in our dedicated computing labs. All our teaching materials are available through Canvas, our virtual learning environment.
Assessment methods
Continuous assessment is employed on the course with a variety of assessments from practical tasks to open book assessments.
