Overview
If you want to pursue a career in hairdressing, this course can help you master the basic skills you'll need. You'll have the chance to take part in a wide range of activities including competitions, presentations, workshops and demonstrations.
Work experience is an essential part of the course, so you'll need to find a work placement at a hairdressing salon one day per week.
This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 5.
Entry requirements
Minimum entry requirements
- Two National 4 qualifications; OR
- Other equivalent qualifications or experience.
- Due to European Directive you require to be 16 years of age by 30 September 2024 to undertake this course.

ESOL entry requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

- Blow Drying Techniques.
- Setting and Winding Techniques for Hair.
- Ladies' Hairdressing: Basic Cutting Categories.
- How to Mix, Apply and Remove Hair Colour.
- Selling Skills.
- Applying Practical Skills.
After the course
Careers
If successful, you could progress to a junior hairdresser role.
Continuing Study
Students can apply for NC Hairdressing (SCQF Level 6), NQ Make-up Artistry (SCQF Level 6), NQ Beauty Therapy (SCQF Level 6), NQ Wellness Therapies (SCQF Level 6).
