  • Overview

    This course will build on your existing basic hairdressing skills and help you develop creative techniques suited to the current industry.  The technical units not only allow you to hone your existing skills but you will also develop creativity and advanced techniques.

    Throughout this course, you will take part in activities, including hairdressing competitions like WorldSkills, seminars, workshops and demonstrations from industry experts. Additionally, there are opportunities to take part in European countries.

    Lecturers teaching on your course have experience and expertise in Hairdressing and learning and teaching methods. Your lecturers continually upskill in professional development and are qualified Colour Experts/Specialists, Trichologists and Cutting Ambassadors. One of our core values as lecturers and industry experts is to support you as an individual to flourish as a student.

    Your course will be interactive using a variety of methods to ensure your learning and progression needs are met. Units are lecturer-led, however, we fully encourage you to take ownership of your learning.

    Work experience is an essential part of the course, so you'll be required to secure a work placement in a hairdressing salon one day a week for the full duration of your course.

    On successful completion of this course, you'll be awarded a Level 6 National Certificate Group Award in  Hairdressing.

    This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 6. 

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • NQ/NC Qualification at SCQF level 5 or SVQ level 2 in Ladies Hairdressing; OR
    • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.
    • Due to European Directive you require to be 16 years of age by 30 September 2024 to undertake this course.

    Additional selection requirements

    • You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area or we'll make an offer based on your application form.
    • You may have to undertake a skills test to demonstrate you are at the appropriate level for this course.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

    • Gents Haircutting.

    After the course

    Careers

    This course will prepare you to work in industry as a senior trainee.

    Continuing Study

    Successful students can progress onto:-

    • HNC in Hairdressing (SCQF Level 7).
    • HNC Fashion Make-up (SCQF Level 7).
    • HND Make-up Artistry TV, Film and Theatre (SCQF Level 8).
    • HND Beauty Therapy (SCQF Level 8).

    Teaching

    How the course is taught

    The course is taught over two 18 week semesters and you'll be continually assessed throughout.

    Assessment methods

    The course inlcudes a variety of assessment methods including practical, closed book and portfolio building.

    Additional Information

    Materials

    You're expected to supply your own basic equipment and tools should be fit for purpose in all aspects of hairdressing. A top-up kit will be provided to support you on your course. In addition, you will need to provide your own stationery. 

    Dress code

    Students must wear black, white or grey and you are expected to portray a professional appearance.
