Overview

Looking to start your career as an engineer? Need a qualification in order to apply for an apprenticeship? If yes, then this course is for you.

This course will develop your theoretical and practical knowledge of both mechanical and electrical engineering as well as helping with the specific skills you'll need to succeed. You'll be taught by staff with significant engineering experience and a proven track record of bringing out the best in their students.

You'll work in our practical workshops where you will need to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which will be provided by the College.

This Engineering Systems course will equip you with an understanding of the knowledge surrounding electrical and mechanical engineering and how these disciplines work together in fields such as automated engineering and mechatronics. You'll gain an understanding of how electrical, electronic and mechanical circuits work, the variety of components and systems that you may encounter in the Manufacturing Industry, together with the tools and skills required to work in the sector.

This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 5.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • Four National 4 qualifications including Mathematics (Application of Maths is not accepted) and preferably a Science subject; OR
  • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

ESOL entry requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

After the course

Careers

The course is aimed at providing opportunities for you to progress onto further study - Electrical or Systems Engineering Apprenticeships or other Engineering Sectors.

Continuing Study

Students who successfully complete this course can progress onto relevant level 6 courses at the college in August - NC Engineering Systems, NC Electrical Engineering or NC Mechanical Engineering.

Teaching

How the course is taught

You'll take part in both practical and theory classes. The course will be taught over three days for 20 weeks with class sessions of two hours duration. You will need to undertake self-study outwith timetabled class contact and arrange lab entry for additional practical activities outside timetabled class contact within course study groups.

Assessment methods

You will be continuously assessed by a mixture of written assessment, project work, oral presentation and practical assessment. Each unit will have on average 3-4 learning outcomes which will be assessed every few weeks within the 20-week course.

Students will be expected to attend college with a notepad, pens, pencils, a ruler and a calculator.
