    This Electrical Engineering course has been designed to provide a balance of practical and theory suitable for working at technician level. It will equip you with a thorough understanding of the knowledge surrounding electrical engineering technologies. You'll gain an understanding of how electrical circuits work, the variety of components and systems that you may encounter in the Electrical Industry, together with the tools to work in the sector.

    This is a nationally recognised award in electrical engineering. The course satisfies one key element of the Modern Apprenticeship framework for Engineering. It provides you with an excellent and thorough grounding in the disciplines that relate to electrical engineering.

    If you're looking for employment within the electrical engineering sector then this is an excellent qualification to support you in becoming a technician or apprentice.

    This NC qualification can also be gained as a part time day release course which runs one day a week over a two-years.

    This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 6.

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • Four National 5 qualifications at Grade C or above including Mathematics (Application of Maths is not accepted) and a Science subject; OR
    • National Qualification at SCQF level 5 in Electrical Engineering; OR
    • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

    Careers

    The course is aimed at providing opportunities for you to progress into further study - Electrical Engineering Apprenticeships or other Engineering Sectors.

    Continuing Study

    After satisfactory performance while achieving your course, you can progress as follows:

    • Year 2: HNC Electrical Engineering or HNC Industrial Automation Engineering with Robotics (Mechatronics).
    • Year 3: HND Electrical Engineering or HND Advanced Industrial Automation Engineering (Mechatronics).
    • Year 4 Onwards:  A University of your choice.

    Teaching

    How the course is taught

    You will be taught by a mixture of practical and theory classes. The course will be taught in two 18 week blocks with class sessions of two hours duration. You will need to undertake self-study outwith timetabled class contact and arrange lab entry for additional practical activities out with timetabled class contact within course study groups.

    Assessment methods

    You will be continuously assessed by a mixture of written assessment, project work, oral presentation and practical assessment. Each unit will have on average four learning outcomes which will be assessed every few weeks within the 18-week block. All learning outcomes must be passed to gain the credit value (normally 1.0) associated with that unit.

    Materials

    You will be responsible for supplying your own copy of recommended course books. You will also be responsible for supplying your own writing and drawing materials along with a scientific calculator.
