Overview
This course is designed for you to progress from OOW level (deck) to Chief Mates or Masters level (Management CoC).
It is for Officers who do not hold a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Nautical Science from a UK Establishment. If you hold an HND, SPD or FD, then this course is not for you.
Course Dates
The course runs a minimum of twice a year in September and January.
Entry requirements
Minimum entry requirements
- Recognised sea time of 12 months at OOW level.
- NAEST Operational Certificate or NARAS Operational Certificate or completed ECDIS generic training
ESOL entry requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

- Marine Engineering Systems.
- Compass.
- Assistance to apply for a Notice of Eligibility (NoE)
- Preparation for the SQA Written exams
- Preparation for the MCA Oral Exams
- Mandatory Short Courses:-
- Human Element, Leadership and Management (HELM Management)
- Navigation Aids, Equipment Simulator Training (NAEST Management)
The course does not include Medical Care on Board as standard and would need to be booked as an added extra. Time is set aside for those requiring to do this course, please discuss this with us at time of booking to arrange.
The College do not arrange your Oral Exam appointment, this is your responsibility to arrange directly with the MCA after obtaining your Notice of Eligibility.
