Overview
This course is designed for you to progress from OOW level (deck) to chief mates level. You will also complete the following short courses - HELM Management, NAEST Management and a Medical Care certificate. The course will equip you to become a competent and efficient chief mate.
There are assessments for the HND units, preparation for the MCA Mates/Masters written exams and also for the MCA Mates oral exam. Students should enrol on each of the courses separately.
Entry requirements
Minimum entry requirements
- A recognised complete sea time of 12 months at OOW level.
- An MCA approved OOW certificate.
- A NAEST (M) certificate (to be valid when finally applying for your COC). The NAEST(M) course is scheduled within the course program.
ESOL entry requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

- Assistance to apply for a Notice of Eligibility (NoE).
- Preparation for the SQA Written exams.
- Preparation for the MCA Oral Exams.
- Mandatory Short Courses for Chief Mate unlimited COC:-
- Human Element, Leadership and Management (HELM Management)
- Navigation Aids, Equipment Simulator Training (NAEST Management)
The course does not include Medical Care on Board as standard and this should be booked as an added extra. Time is set aside to do this course, please discuss this with us at time of booking to arrange.
The College does not arrange your Oral Exam appointment, this is your responsibility to arrange directly with the MCA after obtaining your Notice of Eligibility.
