Overview
City of Glasgow College’s Blended & Distance Learning Team is delighted to offer this remote learning course, delivering the same syllabus that you would receive via a conventional classroom-based HND/AD Nautical Science Programme.
You will access study material via the college virtual learning environment, supplemented with remote support from a dedicated Nautical Science lecturer. This highly flexible programme format allows you continue working as you study, progress at your own pace, and fit your learning around other life commitments. Build towards the next step in your career while avoiding the costs of daily travel and accommodation.
As each unit of the qualification is completed, you will sit unit assessments and exams, undertaken at the college’s Riverside Campus. We offer frequent and regular exam sessions throughout the academic year, so that you can book these at a time that works for you. On completion of the programme, you can continue your studies towards Chief Mate (Unlimited) certification.
Start Date
As this is an online course the start date is flexible. We have continual rolling recruitment for this course, so students can join at any time.

Teaching
How the course is taught
The blended learning programme is an independent-study oriented course, which means there are no artificial deadlines or prescribed schedules of study. Instead, you are given access to a full set of notes, quizzes, practice questions, and mock assessments for each unit.
But studying independently doesn’t mean studying alone. Weekly guidance sessions allow you to check in with your lecturer, keep track of your learning, and meet others on the course. The course coordinator and lecturer can be reached at any point during the term to provide advice and tutorial support when you need it.
Assessment methods
There are 20 examinations to take across the 12 units of the HND/AD Nautical Science qualification. You will visit our Riverside campus to take each of these assessments, which we facilitate throughout the academic year in frequent and regular exam sessions.
