    Following completion of this course, you will typically go to university, or move into industry as supervisors or technicians.

    During your studies, you'll have the use of the college’s extensive engineering equipment, which includes our mechanical workshop, computer labs running CAD design software along with our hydraulic and pneumatic software and labs.

    This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 8. 

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • HNC in Mechanical Engineering OR
    • First year of HND Mechanical Engineering.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

    After the course

    Careers

    Following successful completion of the HND students typically work at technician level in industry or progress to degree level study.

    Continuing Study

    Following successful completion of the HND students are able to progress to 3rd year BEng Glasgow Caledonian University.  Strathclyde University may offer 2nd year entry.

    Teaching

    How the course is taught

    This course is both classroom and practical workshop based.

    Assessment methods

    To achieve an HND you need to pass 30 credits.  Some of the units are assessed in a single exam upon completion of teaching for that unit and others are assessed as individual outcomes.  Engineering Skills is workshop-based.  CAD drawings are completed within our computer suites.

    All units are graded as Pass/Fail other than the Graded Unit which is graded A, B, C or Fail.
