Overview
Our Make-up Artistry TV, Film and Theatre HND provides you with the underpinning knowledge and skills required to work as a make-up artist within the TV, film and theatre industries. You'll learn a range of media make-up and hairstyling techniques necessary to create theatrical, character and special effects looks which will enable you to seek employment as a freelance make-up artist, an assistant to a more senior colleague or work as a member of a make-up design team.
You'll be involved in creating images and characters through the medium of make-up, hairstyles and prosthetics.
As a makeup artist you'll gain the skills required to interpret make-up requirements and produce both a creative and technically accurate visual representation. This may involve very basic make-up for a TV presenter through to more complex period make-up or special effects.
Entry requirements
Minimum entry requirements
- Two Highers at Grade C or above including Art; OR
- National Qualification at SCQF level 6 Make-Up Artistry; OR
- SCQF level 6 or SVQ level 3 Ladies Hairdressing; OR
- NCGA level 6 in Beauty Care; OR
- Other equivalent qualifications or experience.
Additional selection requirements
- You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area.
- There will also be a basic practical skills test and you'll be given the opportunity to show the team some examples of your work.
ESOL entry requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

- Make-up Artistry: Essential Make-up Skills.
- Make-up Artistry: Hairstyling and Skills.
- Make-up Artistry: 20th Century Make-up and Hairstyles.
- Make-up Artistry: Specialised Make-Up Effects for TV and Film.
- Make-up Artistry: Ageing Skills.
- Make-up Artistry: Production Study.
- Make-up Artistry: Graded Unit 2.
Additional units will be included to make up the full group award to gain your qualification at HND Level.
After the course
Careers
You may consider career prospects in theatre, film, freelance make-up artist, working on make-up counters, fashion and editorial for photographers.
Continuing Study
This is the highest qualification held in the area of make-up artistry. You could progress onto degree level in England. You may also consider a career in teaching in Further Education and TQFE via Stirling or Dundee University.
Teaching
How the course is taught
The course is taught over 2 semesters. You will be continually assessed throughout the course.
Assessment methods
There will be a variety of assessment methods used including practical, closed book and portfolio building.
Additional Information
Materials
You are required to supply your own kit. The college will supply aspects of materials with regards to hair pieces, wigs and special effect products. In addition, you are expected to supply your own stationery. More information will be given at interview.
