Overview
You'll develop practical skills through manufacture and express yourself through design. You’ll be encouraged to study in-depth the construction of furniture, to develop and build designs and to hone your skills in cabinet making, upholstery and wood finishing.
This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 8.
Entry requirements
Minimum entry requirements
- NC/NQ Furniture Making; OR
- Higher Craft and Design/Design and Manufacture at Grade C or above AND National 5 English at Grade C or above; OR
- Other equivalent qualifications or experience.
Additional selection requirements
- You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area or we'll make an offer based on your application form.
- You'll be asked to provide examples of any design and/or making of furniture or 3D work.
ESOL entry requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

Careers
After completing the course you can progress to become a self-employed Designer/Maker of furniture, as well as pursue jobs in the furniture trades and shop-fitting.
Continuing Study
Students who complete their HND may also progress to BA (Hons) courses at various UK Universities.
