Overview
On this HND Electrical Engineering course, you'll expand on the electrical principles covered in National 6 and higher-level education. During the course, you'll be taught by staff with significant industry experience to develop your skills in a range of theory and practical disciplines. Many of the course units are project-based with report writing included in a few first-year subject units and just over half in the second year subject units. In your first year, you will also undertake a final Graded Exam.
The course is designed to enable you to gain employment in the Electrical Engineering Industry and Electrical supply sector which deals with the production, transmission, distribution and application of electricity and the manufacture, installation, design and maintenance of electrical equipment.
This HND qualification is available as a part-time day release course one day a week over two years. Entry can only be gained after the successful completion of the Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Electrical Engineering.
This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 8.
Entry requirements
Minimum entry requirements
- Two Highers at Grade C or above including Mathematics and preferably Physics; OR
- National Qualification at SCQF level 6 in a relevant Engineering subject that includes Mathematics Technician 1; OR
- Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

ESOL entry requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

Careers
The qualification provides you with a relevant mix of competencies enabling entry to employment.
Continuing study
If you successfully complete the 1st year HND Electrical Engineering you can move onto the second year HND Electrical Engineering at the college or onto part-time or full-time degree courses in Scotland or the UK. Possible entry to year two of BEng Electrical Power Systems at Glasgow Caledonian University.
Teaching
How the course is taught
The course will be taught in two 18-week blocks with class sessions lasting two hours. You will also need to undertake self-study outwith timetabled classes and arrange lab entry for additional practical activities out with timetabled class contact within course study groups.
Assessment methods
Each unit will have a minimum of one learning outcome end of unit assessment which may also include a practical element. Some units have more than one learning outcome assessment which will be delivered within the timeframe of the unit.
You will also undertake a 1 Credit HNC Electrical Engineering Graded Unit 1 at SCQF level 7. This will be in the form of a 3 hour written examination normally at the end of May of each year.
