  • Overview

    This course will provide you with the values, skills and knowledge you need to work effectively in a range of care settings. You will focus on the values that underpin work in social care settings, National Care Standards and the Scottish Social Services Council codes of practice and how it informs your practice. You will develop the skills required to work with a range of service users, preparing for employment in a care setting.

    This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 7.

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • Two Highers at Grade C or above preferably including English; OR
    • NPA Health and Social Care plus one Higher; OR
    • National Qualification at SCQF Level 6 in a related subject; OR
    • Candidates with SVQ3 in a related area will be considered; OR
    • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

    Additional selection requirements

    • You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area or we'll make an offer based on your application form.
    • You'll also need to provide a reference from your most recent educational provider (if you're in education) or employer. 
    • A minimum of 120 hours direct care experience either in a voluntary or paid capacity.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

    What you study

    Some of the subjects you will study are:

    • Care in Contemporary Society.
    • Lifespan Development Theoretical Approaches.
    • Care Practice.
    • Health, Wellbeing and Safeguarding.
    • Understanding Loss and the Process of Grief.
    • Mental Health Issues in a Care Setting.

    A range of other units is also included to meet the requirements of the award including three SVQ3 units and a Graded Unit.

    Entry level positions in social services.

    Continuing Study

    You can progress on to degree programmes in Social Work and other subjects such as BA (Hons) Social Work at the University of the West of Scotland, Glasgow Caledonian University, and University of Strathclyde as well as other universities across Scotland.

    Second-year entry may be possible as well as entry to other degree programmes according to entry criteria such as BA Integrated Health and Social Care at the University of the West of Scotland. There are also other opportunities such as BA/Diploma Higher Education: Education and Social Services.
