  • Overview

City of Glasgow College is delighted to partner with the University of Strathclyde in the delivery of the Engineering Academy Programme. This is a pioneering programme that offers you an alternative route into university and employment as a Strathclyde student. The first year is an enhanced HNC programme at the college with direct transfer into second year of one of the engineering degrees at Strathclyde University.

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    ESOL entry requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

    What you study

Strathclyde and City of Glasgow College have piloted the latest qualification from SQA which is the NextGen HNC in Engineering.  We deliver the Mechanical Engineering options along with some additional units to give an enhanced HNC that prepares you for year 2 at Strathclyde.  In the first year at college you will study the following subjects:

    • Professional Practice in Engineering - which involves project work and sessions reflecting on students' metaskills.
    • Principles.
    • Mechanics and Materials - this covers Dynamics, Statics and Materials.
    • Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics - covering Thermofluids, Thermodynamics and Pneumatics & Hydraulics.
    • Engineering Maths 1, 2, 3 & 4.
    • Computer-Aided Draughting.
    • Computer-Aided Design.

In addition to attending college, you will also attend the university each week to undertake lab work within your chosen department and complete a workshop skills unit.

    After the course

    Careers

At the end of the degree programme, you will be able to apply for employment as a Graduate Engineer however, between years 2 & 3 and 3 & 4, paid work summer placements are available.  This will give real industrial experience.

    Continuing Study

Following successful completion of the 1st year (pass all units and achieve the HNC with Merit) you will join the 2nd year of your chosen degree programme at Strathclyde.

The degree programmes available are as follows:

    Department of Biomedical Engineering*:

    • BEng Hons Biomedical Engineering.

Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering:

    • BEng Hons Civil Engineering.
    • BEng Hons Civil & Environmental Engineering.

Department of Design, Manufacturing & Engineering Management:

    • BEng Hons Product Design Engineering.
    • BEng Hons Sports Engineering.
    • BEng Hons Production Engineering Management.
    • BSc Hons Product Design and Innovation.

Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering:

    • BEng Hons Mechanical Engineering

Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering:

    • BEng Hons Naval Architecture with Ocean Engineering.
    • BEng Hons Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.
    • BEng Hons Naval Architecture with High Performance Marine Vehicles.

*Please note that students will transfer to 1st year of the BEng Biomedical Engineering programme.

    Teaching

    How the course is taught

We teach the course over 3 days per week in our Riverside Campus.

    Assessment methods

This is a 17 credit HNC.  Some of the units are assessed in a single exam upon completion of teaching for that unit (e.g. Statics, Thermofluids and Dynamics).  Other units involve practical skills such as fault finding on the pneumatic and hydraulics rigs.  CAD drawings are completed within our computer suites.

Other units are assessed using a Grading Framework that are mapped to skills and competences required by the Engineering Council for Engineering Technicians.

Performance on the units is measured throughout the course which determines the grade of the HNC (Achieved, Achieved with Merit, Achieved with Distinction).

    Additional Information

    Materials

All materials for this course will be provided and accessible through the college VLE.
