    • Statics and Strength of Materials.
    • Thermofluids.
    • Dynamics.
    • Materials Selection.
    • Engineering Maths 1, 2, 3 & 4.
    • Pneumatics and Hydraulics.
    • Engineering Principles.
    • Computer-Aided Draughting for Engineers.
    • Engineering Drawing.
    • Communications.
    • Introduction to Quality Management.
    • DC and AC Principles.

In addition to attending college, you will also attend the university each week to undertake lab work within your chosen department and complete a workshop skills unit.

    After the course

    Careers

At the end of the degree programme, you will be able to apply for employment as a Graduate Engineer however, between years 2 & 3 and 3 & 4, paid work summer placements are available.  This will give real industrial experience.

    Continuing Study

The degree programmes available are as follows:

    Department of Biomedical Engineering*:

    • BEng Hons Biomedical Engineering.

Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering:

    • BEng Hons Civil Engineering.
    • BEng Hons Civil & Environmental Engineering.

Department of Design, Manufacturing & Engineering Management:

    • BEng Hons Product Design Engineering.
    • BEng Hons Sports Engineering.
    • BEng Hons Production Engineering Management.
    • BSc Hons Product Design and Innovation.

Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering:

    • BEng Hons Mechanical Engineering

Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering:

    • BEng Hons Naval Architecture with Ocean Engineering.
    • BEng Hons Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.
    • BEng Hons Naval Architecture with High Performance Marine Vehicles.

*Please note that students will transfer to 1st year of the BEng Biomedical Engineering programme.

    Teaching

    How the course is taught

We aim to teach the course over 3 days per week in our Riverside Campus.

    Assessment methods

This is a 17 credit HNC.  Some of the units are assessed in a single exam upon completion of teaching for that unit (e.g. Statics and Strength of Materials, Thermofluids and Dynamics).  Other units involve practical skills such as fault finding on the pneumatic and hydraulics rigs.  CAD drawings are completed within our computer suites.

Towards the end of the year students undertake their Graded Unit 1 exam.  This is a 3 hour, closed book exam containing questions from the following topics: Statics and Strength of Materials, Thermofluids, Dynamics, Materials, Quality, Pneumatics and Hydraulics and Engineering Principles.

All units are graded as Pass/Fail other than the Graded Unit which is graded A, B, C or Fail.
