    This exciting new course has been designed in partnership with industry professionals to ensure you are prepared to work in marketing, advertising & public relations organisations.  To reflect changes in industry there is an increased focus on the use of digital and social media techniques in marketing communications.  There is also a solid grounding in theory allowing progression on to the new HNDs in Marketing and Advertising & PR.  There is a high level of current industry practice with employers and industry experts.  At the end of the course, you will have a strong portfolio of examples to demonstrate your competence to employers and academic institutes. 

    Our students regularly enter national competitions with great results and media coverage.

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • One Higher at Grade C or above in a relevant* subject; OR
    • NC or NQ qualification at SCQF level 6 in a relevant business subject; OR
    • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

    * relevant subjects include English, Business Management, Economics, History, Mathematics, Media or a Science subject.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

    • Using Financial Accounting Statements.
    • Graded Unit 1.

    After the course

    Careers

    This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills for employment in marketing, advertising, PR, (digital) media roles at junior/introductory level across private and public sector agencies, consultancies and industry.

    Continuing Study

    The HNC Marketing Communications course is a stand-alone qualification and you can leave after one year with an HNC.  Alternatively, you can progress onto further study and on successful completion of 15 credits including the Graded Unit you can progress on to the new HND Marketing or HND in Advertising & PR at the college.

    If you decide to leave after the HNC you can apply to relevant university courses (first year) in marketing, advertising, PR and business awards.  For example:-

    • BA Marketing  - Strathclyde University, Stirling University, University West of Scotland.
    • BA (Hons) Marketing or International  Marketing  - Glasgow Caledonian University.
    • BA (Hons) Communication, Advertising & PR,  BA (Hons) Marketing with Digital Media – Edinburgh Napier University.
    • BA/BA (Hons) PR, Marketing & Events – Queen Margaret University.

    Students successfully completing the HND can apply for 3rd-year university entry.

    You can progress onto a range of qualifications with professional bodies, including the Certificate and/or Professional Diploma or Digital Diploma from the Chartered Institute of Marketing or the Foundation Certificate from the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising.

    Teaching

    How the course is taught

    We'll ensure you have the academic knowledge and skills to apply current theories and practice to enable further study at university. 

    You'll take part in real, live briefs where you'll have the opportunity to present to industry experts and decision-makers.  We have regular speakers from the industry, visits and workshops organised throughout the session.

    We also work closely with the Chartered Institute of Marketing and its members to offer development events and opportunities for students.

    Assessment methods

    A range of continuous assessment methods such as closed/open book examinations, case studies, essays, reports, presentations.
