Overview

Please note - this is a school college partnership course for school students in S5-S6.

This HNC is designed to provide you with the key competencies required to enter the world of financial services. 

Throughout the course, you will get an insight into the financial institutions and financial markets in the UK and the relationship between these institutions, markets and the customer.

You will learn about the features of the economy and use of investment, savings and lending products offered to personal customers, personal finance protection products, personal investment products and the regulatory environment applicable to personal financial services.

The HNC will:

  • Develop a range of vocational skills specific to the financial services industry in relation to product and service knowledge and an understanding of the role of its providers.
  • Preparing you for employment in the financial services industry at clerical, sales or administration levels.
  • Developing a broad-based range of vocational skills in relation to, for example, communications, customer service, and the use of information technology.

There are a number of significant advantages in choosing to complete this HNC course, including: 

  • You won’t pay any fees or require a student loan potentially saving you money. 
  • When you finish school, you can progress directly onto the second year of HND Financial Services. 
  • You will attend college for 2 days per week and complete study in your own time.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

A minimum of ONE relevant Higher at Grade C or above and a minimum of four National 5s at Grade C or above in relevant subjects.

These must include English or Maths or equivalent. Subjects may include business-related subjects, Maths, English, social or STEM subjects.

After the course

Careers

This course could lead to entry level positions in a variety of employment opportunities, including working in banking, building societies, pension funds, investment companies, insurance, unit trusts, stock market operations, life and pensions, asset management and intermediation.

Continuing Study

Successful students have the option to progress to further study at a higher level. For example:

  • HND Business at City of Glasgow College – one year full-time to complete the HND Business.
  • Second year of most business-related degree programmes at a range of universities.

Students who successfully complete HND Business can articulate to the third year of many degree programmes in business.

City of Glasgow College has strong links with financial services organisations, offering industry visits and guest speakers to enhance the course.

Assessment methods

You'll be assessed throughout this course with the assessments taking the form of practical assessments, assignments and case studies. You'll also undertake a Graded Unit project, which is designed to assess your ability to integrate the knowledge and skills gained through the mandatory units.
