  • Overview

    This course prepares you for a career as a Technical Engineer in the Electrical Engineering Industry and Electrical supply sector which deals with the production, transmission, distribution and application of electricity and the manufacturing, installation, and maintenance of electrical equipment.

    During the course, you will cover areas involving electrical circuit analysis using industry-standard software and simulation packages. Within our department's laboratory and workshops, you will conduct analysis using theory and practical applications of magnetic principles and practical electrical machines.

    Near the end of the course, there is a graded exam in addition to all course assessments. Successful completion of the course allows you to apply for a place on the second-year program of the HND Electrical Engineering course at City of Glasgow College.

    This HNC qualification can also be gained on a part-time attendance through our HNC Electrical Engineering day release course which runs one day a week over a two-year timetabled program.

    This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 7. 

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • Two Highers at Grade C or above including Mathematics and preferably Physics; OR
    • National Qualification at SCQF level 6 in a relevant Engineering subject; OR
    • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

    • Electrical Machine Principle.
    • Mathematics for Engineers units 1 and 2.
    • Three Phase Systems.
    • Electricity Power Systems.
    • Electrical Installation Skills.

    Careers

    The qualification HNC Electrical Engineering will equip you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for success in employment in the Electrical Engineering Industry and Electrical supply sector.

    Continuing study

    This qualification will provide you with a relevant mix of competencies allowing progression to further study. On successful completion of the HNC you can progress to the:- 

    • HND Electrical Engineering year 2 at City of Glasgow College or
    • Part-time or full-time degree courses in Scotland and the UK.

    Teaching

    How the course is taught

    The course will be taught in two 18 week blocks with class sessions of two hours duration. You'll need to undertake self-study outwith timetabled class contact and arrange lab entry for additional practical activities out with timetabled class contact within course study groups.

    Assessment methods

    Each unit will have a minimum of one learning outcome end of unit assessment which may also include a practical element. Some units have more than one learning outcome assessment which will be delivered within the timeframe of the unit.

    You will also undertake a 1 credit HNC Electrical Engineering Graded Unit 1 at SCQF level 7. This will be in the form of a 3 hour written examination normally at the end of May of each year.

    You will be asked to supply your own copy of recommended course books.  You will have to supply your own writing and drawing materials along with a scientific calculator.
