Overview
This multi-faceted Media and Communication course will help you to develop a broad base of media skills suitable for higher education and employment in the modern, convergent media and communications industries.
Each tutor has a wide variety of media experience, and you'll gain even more knowledge from expert media guest speakers, visits, field trips and professional workshops.
You’ll be continually assessed and will be working on industry-relevant projects, in some cases for real clients. You will be expected to conduct interviews with the public, deliver presentations, write to a professional standard and work in groups. You will be responsible for delivering the work required of you, often to a deadline.
The course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 7.
Entry requirements
Minimum entry requirements
- Higher English or Higher Media Studies at Grade C or above; OR
- NC Media or related subject; OR
- Other equivalent qualifications or experience.
Additional selection requirements
- You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area or we'll make an offer based on your application form.
- You'll be given a short written exercise (around 200 words) so we can review your writing style, syntax, spelling and grammar.
ESOL entry requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

Continuing Study
If you have completed all 15 credits of the HNC programme, with a minimum B at Graded Unit, you're encouraged to apply for year two entry to the HND Creative Industries: Media and Communication at the College.

Teaching
How the course is taught
Teaching on this course employs a wide variety of experiences, from tutor-led lectures to individual and group work. The course is taught through a mixture of online and in-college teaching. This is delivered through a variety of project-based approaches, from tutor and one to one delivery, incorporating a variety of presentations, quizzes and discussions.
Assessment methods
Continuous assessment methods are used on this course, with a variety of open-book, closed-book, supervised and self-directed assessments. These can be practical assignments, class tests and presentations.This means there will be several assessments per week at busy times in the year.
