Overview
This course includes both traditional and innovative art practices. It gives you a broad visual education in contemporary art practice.
You'll develop your skills in a range of specialist disciplines and increase your awareness and knowledge of conceptual thinking. It also gives you the opportunity to develop and strengthen a portfolio of artwork.
You will be awarded an HNC Art & Design (Fine Art) on successful completion of this course and will have enough credit points to continue on to the 2nd year of an HND course.

This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 7.
Entry requirements
Minimum entry requirements
- Higher Art and Higher English at Grade C or above AND two National 4 qualifications; OR
- NQ Art and Design; OR
- Other equivalent qualifications or experience.
Additional selection requirements
- You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area or we'll make an offer based on your application form..
- You'll also be asked to submit a digital portfolio of your art and design work for assessment - HNC Fine Art Sample Portfolio. It should be one single document with a range of examples of your work either a PDF or a presentation doc - Portfolio Guidance.
ESOL entry requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

This course prepares you for work as an independent exhibiting artist, depending on the quality of your work, your motivation and self-promotion skills.
Continuing Study
Successful students will be encouraged to continue their education by applying for the HND (2nd Year) in Fine Art/ Contemporary Art Practice.
You might also apply for art school or university degree courses.
