Overview

This qualification is designed to enable you to develop skills to communicate with deaf people using British Sign Language (BSL) in a range of everyday situations. You will participate in longer and more varied conversations than at Level 1.

The course will develop communication in BSL about real life, routine, and daily experiences. You will be able to deal with most routine communication and have enough understanding of grammar to cope with some non-routine communication. You will be taught a number of regional variations in sign language.

The specification has been designed to be consistent with the National Language Standards at Level 2.

Qualification Structure

The qualification is divided into three units, each of which can be achieved separately.

The units can be done in any order at any time but it is recommended that the content of Unit BSL201 is covered before Unit BSL202 or BSL203.

To achieve the full Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language, you are required to achieve all units.

  • BSL201 (J/600/0210) - BSL Receptive Skills.   
  • BSL202 (D/600/0214) - BSL Productive Skills.          
  • BSL203 (A/600/0219) - BSL Conversational Skills.  

Please Note - After you have booked your course please email ptadmissions@cityofglasgowcollege.ac.uk with a copy of your BSL Level 1 Certificate and they will forward this to the Curriculum Head who will confirm if it meets the criteria for the course. 

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • Full Level 1 Award in British Sign Language (Signature BSL1), you must pass all units 101,102 and 103. You must upload a scan/photo of your certificate as part of this application.
  • If you are currently studying for the Signature BSL 1, you will be contacted to discuss your application in more detail.
  • If you have attained any SQA unit in British Sign Language, you will have to enrol on BSL Signature Level 1 and pass all three 101,102 and 103 units before you can proceed to BSL Signature level 2.
  • The College retains discretion regarding the BSL level to which an applicant enrols.

Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language is suitable for those who:

  • wish to achieve language skills at an intermediate level to improve communication with deaf people.
  • are deaf and wish to gain a qualification in their native language.
  • are family, friends and colleagues of deaf people.
  • wish to progress from the BSL level 1 Signature qualification (not SQA) and who may want to progress to more advanced levels of study in BSL at a later date. 
  • are studying for personal development.

Additional selection requirements

Please be aware that BSL competence standards include requirements for you to have sufficient sight, manual dexterity, facial and body movement to produce and receive BSL.

What you study

You'll study:

You will be study and practise around the 4 themes embedded in the qualification.  Theme 1 is mandatory so you must do this. You will also study two other themes out of the three optional themes below. The two optional themes will be chosen by the teacher in consultation with you.

Theme 1 - Everyday Conversation (Mandatory)

  • Theme 2 - Eating and Drinking (Optional)
  • Theme 3 - Spending and Shopping
  • Theme 4 - Travel and Holidays


In Unit BSL201 you will be assessed on the content of Theme 1 only.

In Units BSL202 and BSL203 you will use and build upon the vocabulary and grammatical features of Theme 1.

Themes 2, 3 and 4 include the vocabulary from Theme 1. You are expected to increase your understanding and use of BSL grammar and vocabulary in these units. Some of the learning hours will be used to practice skills and carry out the assessment for Units BSL202 and BSL203.

For Unit BSL202 you will be assessed on the content of Theme 1 and the first choice of the optional themes.

For Unit BSL203 you will be assessed on the content of Theme 1 and the second choice of the optional themes.

Continuing Study

On completing this Signature level 2 course (on passing exams 201, 202 and 203) you may progress on to a wide range of qualifications available, including:

  • Signature Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language.
  • Signature Level 4 Certificate in British Sign Language.
  • Signature Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language & Introduction to Interpreting.
  • Signature Level 6 NVQ Certificate in British Sign Language.

Please note that the above qualifications are not currently offered by City of Glasgow College.

Teaching

How the course is taught

The course will be taught in a friendly atmosphere, but you will engage in class by producing and receiving signs.  You must appreciate this course requires considerable practice, both during class and in your own time, to reach assessment standard.

  • You should dedicate at least 6 hours per week at home for study and practice to ensure your skills improve and develop.
  • Engage in the lessons.
  • Be prepared to work with a diverse range of people within your class.

Be prepared to let class members work with you – all class members will work with each other.

Assessment methods

Assessment will be a mix of multiple-choice, presentations and communications in BSL.

Handouts will be provided in class as appropriate. Learners will be advised by the Lecturer if there is a need to purchase any material.
