Overview

This course provides a general introduction to the skills needed for further training in a wide variety of sectors such as - accountancy, financial services, retail management, supply chain management and general business.   

It is an ideal starting point for school leavers or adult returners who want to progress their academic journey to study at Level 6 and maybe even further onto HNC/D level.  After successfully completing the NQ Level 4 and a relevant Level 6 qualification you can progress onto HNC. 

You'll be assessed continuously throughout this course with the assessments taking the form of practical assessments, assignment and case studies. There is no final examination. 

You'll undertake a programme of guidance activities designed to help you make the most of your qualifications and college experience. 

You'll be required to attend college up to 4 days every week from 9am to 5pm. 

This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 4. 

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

  • Two National 4 qualifications; OR 
  • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

ESOL entry requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

Continuing Study

You can progress to NQ Level 6 study in areas related to Business and Finance. These may include some of the following areas of study: Accountancy,  Financial Services, Fashion Business, Retail Management, Business Management and Supply Chain Management all offered at the college.

Teaching

How the course is taught

The course is intended to be delivered in a blended way with up to two days per week being taught online and up to two days per week being taught in college (subject to and operating within any Scottish Government Covid-19 operating procedures).   You are timetabled for approximately 16 hours per week and an additional 16 hours should be allowed for studying out with class time in order to be successful. 

You will complete practical assignments based on a variety of case studies. There will also be an element of report writing to demonstrate the ability to explain and analyse information. 

You will be required to use IT to complete some of the units. You should ensure that you possess a basic level of IT in Microsoft Office including Word and Excel. 

For online learning, you will require access to a device and Wifi. You will also be accessing learning resources on our virtual learning environment - Canvas.

Assessment methods

This course will be assessed using a mixture of timed assessments (undertaken online), essays and portfolios of work in an open book environment.
