City showcase Scottish cuisine at Tartan Week
New York City has been buzzing with the spirit of Scotland during this year's Tartan Week, and at the heart of the festivities was Scotland’s National Chef, City of Glasgow College’s very own Gary Maclean.
Gary has embarked on a remarkable journey through the city, highlighting Scottish cuisine and culinary education with the support of Scottish Development International. Maclean's packed schedule, filled with prestigious events and educational initiatives, has solidified the cultural bridge between Scotland and the United States, further elevating the profile of Scottish food and drink abroad.
The week kicked off on Wednesday, 3 April, with a Food and Drink Showcase at Macallan’s Gallery New York, hosted by Scottish Development International. Maclean crafted an exquisite menu, thoughtfully incorporating products available in the North American market, underscoring the adaptability and global appeal of Scottish cuisine. The event attracted food and drink buyers from across the East Coast, providing an unparalleled opportunity to promote Scottish products and culinary innovation.
Educational Collaboration with the Culinary Institute of New York
On Thursday, 4 April, Maclean's expertise was on full display as he took on the role of guest lecturer at the Culinary Institute of New York (CINY), one of North America's leading hospitality schools. His involvement highlighted the ongoing collaboration between CINY and City of Glasgow College but also offered students a unique perspective on Scottish culinary arts, fostering an educational exchange across the Atlantic.
That same evening, Maclean contributed to the American Scottish Foundation’s efforts by curating an authentic Scottish menu for their fundraising charity Supper Club. This event displayed Maclean's culinary prowess and supported scholarships for students in Scotland and various environmental and cultural charities, emphasising the profound impact of culinary arts on societal advancement and cultural exchange.
The pinnacle of Maclean's week in New York was his participation in the Alumni Cocktail Reception at the British Consulate Residence on Friday, 5 April. Tasked with writing the menu and overseeing catering, Maclean's creations were savoured by politicians from Westminster and Holyrood, making this event a highlight of Tartan Week. His involvement underscored the significance of culinary diplomacy in fostering international relationships, with the College taking centre stage in these efforts.
Reflecting on Tartan Week Gary Maclean said:
“It was an honour to showcase Scottish cuisine to an international audience. Our food and drink are justifiably world-famous, and Tartan Week plays an important role in promoting our produce and culinary education to the North American market.
“Our professional cookery team deliver a talented pipeline of graduates to the hospitality sector that is so important for Scotland’s economy. By continuing to foster collaboration with organisations such as the Culinary Institute of New York we will ensure the education at City remains genuinely world-class”.
Gary's week in New York has been a celebration of Scottish culture and cuisine but also a testament to the power of culinary arts in bridging communities, fostering educational opportunities, and supporting charitable causes. Tartan Week plays a valuable role in developing overseas trade for Scottish produce and Gary Maclean’s attendance at Tartan Week was financially supported by Scottish Development International and Seafood Scotland.
