CITY OF GLASGOW COLLEGE LEADS THE WAY IN MARITIME DIVERSITY
City of Glasgow College has proudly become the first college in the UK to sign the Diversity in Maritime Pledge as part of Maritime UK's initiative to foster a more inclusive and diverse maritime sector. This commitment demonstrates the college’s dedication to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion within the maritime industry, ensuring future cadets and industry leaders reflect the rich diversity of modern society.
The Diversity in Maritime Pledge aims to create positive change by encouraging organisations across the maritime sector to actively engage in and promote diversity. By signing the pledge, City of Glasgow College joins leading maritime companies, organisations, and institutions committed to creating an inclusive workplace, where everyone - regardless of background - has equal opportunities to succeed.
Chris Keenan, Dean of the Faculty of Nautical & STEM, who spearheaded the initiative, commented,
"Signing the Diversity in Maritime Pledge is an important milestone for our college. We are committed to ensuring that our Merchant Navy cadetships and other maritime training programmes are accessible to everyone, fostering a welcoming environment where individuals from all backgrounds can thrive. The maritime industry is evolving, and we believe in shaping a future that champions diversity and inclusivity at its core."
As the UK’s leading maritime training provider, City of Glasgow College plays a vital role in the education and development of the next generation of maritime professionals. Signing this pledge enhances the college’s ongoing efforts to support underrepresented groups and ensure that the maritime sector remains innovative, dynamic, and reflective of the society it serves.
Maritime UK’s Diversity in Maritime programme has been widely praised for its focus on addressing imbalances and promoting inclusive practices across the sector. The pledge forms a core part of this mission, with signatories agreeing to uphold a framework of values that prioritise diversity in leadership, recruitment, retention, and promotion.
As the maritime industry continues to face global challenges and opportunities, City of Glasgow College is proud to take a leading role in fostering a diverse, inclusive, and future-ready workforce.
