Calling All Young Designers: Sixth Annual Jewellery Design Competition Announced
The popular Secondary Schools Jewellery Design Competition is returning for its sixth year, offering young artists a chance to highlight their creativity while addressing the pressing issue of climate change.
This year’s theme is inspired by the beauty of plants and flora, encouraging students to design a pendant that celebrates nature’s resilience and raises awareness of the environment. Entrants are invited to present their designs as hand-drawn sketches or computer-generated illustrations.
A standout feature of the competition is its commitment to sustainability. The winning design will be 3D printed and cast in silver reclaimed from discarded NHS X-ray films through Vipa Designs’ innovative 'AgAIN' initiative. This unique approach highlights the role of design in promoting sustainable practices.
Last year, the competition saw an overwhelming response with over 850 entries. This year’s submissions will be judged by an esteemed panel, including celebrated jeweller Maeve Gillies, Peter Crump of Vipa Designs and Chairperson of the Goldsmiths' Craft and Design Council, and Sandra Gunn, Chair of Craft Scotland.
The deadline for submissions is 21st March 2025, and more information about the competition is available at Competition Website.
Lisa McGovern, Curriculum Head for Craft and Design expressed her excitement for the competition:
“I am thrilled to see the 6th Annual Secondary Schools Jewellery Design Competition continue to inspire young talent while championing sustainability. This year's theme, focused on the beauty and resilience of flora, is a timely reminder of the power of creativity in raising environmental awareness. I can't wait to see the ideas these budding jewellers bring to life!"
With creativity, artisanry, and a commitment to the planet at its core, this competition is a wonderful opportunity for young people to make their mark in jewellery design while contributing to a vital cause.
