How to Apply

Applying for a cadetship is very different from applying for other college courses as you will apply to a sponsoring company that will then send you to college and fund your studies.

  • Step 1 - Qualifications: Whether you are in school, thinking about which subjects to choose, or you already have your qualifications, it is important you know what you need for your chosen course.
  • Step 2 - Sponsorship: Once you have the entry qualifications it is time to find the right sponsoring company. Different companies offer different things in their cadetships often operating in various seas across the world. There are several sponsoring companies operating in the UK that send cadets to City of Glasgow College so it is important to research and find the right one for you. Applications should be made directly to sponsoring companies.  Sponsoring shipping companies that we work with.
  • Step 3 - Company Interviews: If your application is successful, the sponsoring company will invite you to interview. This is a great opportunity to ask questions about the company, find out more about the cadetship and what is involved. This is potentially the start of an important relationship in the formative years of your sea career; be sure to prepare.
  • Step 4 - Accept Sponsorship: After the interview, if you are successful, the sponsoring company will offer you a place on a cadetship. If you agree then a new and exciting life chapter begins.
  • Step 5 - Join your college: You will be enrolled in classes at City of Glasgow College and attend college typically 5 days a week during college phases. You will be fully supported in your studies to prepare you for time spent at sea.
